YouTuber Gommeblog has shared a 16-minute behind-the-scenes video filmed at the Mercedes-AMG factory in Affalterbach. It highlights the company’s famous principle of “One person – one engine” and details the assembly process for a 4.0-liter M178-series V8.
A single engineer is responsible for building the whole engine around a cylinder block suspended on a mobile stand. You can see how the expert installs the pistons and the shafts, how he aligns them with the heads and the manifolds, and how the turbocharger setup gets added on.
All principal assembly stages and checks are being performed manually, and once everything is complete the engine gets a unique ID plate with the engineer’s name on it. It is then mounted on a test stand to measure and record the key performance indicators.
Mercedes introduced the M176/M178 engine lineup in 2014. These eight-cylinder mills power AMG GT supercars and flagship versions of the company’s normal sedans and SUVs.
