Owning a supercar like the Mercedes-AMG GT R is a no small privilege in itself, but getting your hands on a Black Series example is borderline impossible with the strictly limited edition all sold out and costing seven digits on the used market. Perhaps this is why Hamburg-based company SR Tuning decided to make it available for more people than Mercedes intended.
The principle is simple: the tuner takes a normal AMG GT R and retrofits it with all the Black Series parts available from the manufacturer directly. These include carbon-fiber bumpers, the splitter, the diffuser, the air intakes, the hood, the fenders, the trunk lid and the rear wing. None of these parts is aftermarket; all are OEM.
Of course, the car still doesn’t end up identical to the Black Series. For example, there is the 730-horsepower engine that you cannot just obtain by normal means. SR Tuning addresses the issue by offering a Stage IV boost kit for the stock AMG GT R engine, dialing its output all the way up to 973 PS (960 hp / 716 kW) and 1,288 Nm (950 lb-ft) of torque.
This makes the tuned replica more powerful than its source of inspiration. However, the 0-100 km/h launch time amounts to 3.2 seconds for both. The replica inches out a moderate advantage in the top speed department with 340 km/h (211 mph) versus 325 km/h (202 mph) of the vanilla Black Series.
As usual, you are supposed to contact the tuner directly for pricing details, and we wouldn’t expect the conversion to cost much less than the original Black Series. The point of such tuning is probably not in saving money, but in letting as many people as possible enjoy a car that looks and (almost) feels like the AMG GT Black Series.
