Mercedes-Benz E-Class spawns a part-electric AMG E 53 version

The newly revealed E-Class AMG lineup – both sedan and wagon – will utilize a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine in tandem with an electric motor. Both will benefit from a stiffer body, a tweaked chassis and a revised body kit.

The petrol engine supplies 449 PS (443 hp / 330 kW) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque. The electric motor comes built into the nine-speed automatic transmission and adds 163 PS (161 hp / 120 kW) with 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque of its own. The combined nominal capacity of the system comes to 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, but can be briefly boosted via Race Start to 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW).

The sedan needs 3.8 seconds to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph), with the E-Class AMG estate lagging one-tenth of a second behind it. The respective top speeds are capped at 280 and 275 km/h (174 and 171 mph), and you can hit 140 km/h (87 mph) in all-electric mode.

From the technical standpoint, the new E-Class AMG is a plug-in hybrid that comes with a 28.6-kWh battery you can charge from external sources. Once full, the charge should yield more than 100 km (62 mph) of range, according to Mercedes’ own estimates. Multiple regenerative brake modes will help extend that range, and the most efficient mode of all lets you drive with just one pedal, Tesla-style.

The body features multiple reinforcing braces, new air intakes and spoilers, and 22mm (0.9”) wider front wheel arches. The wheels measure 19 inches across in the base spec, but you can opt for bigger rims if you want to – up to 22 inches. The base version already has AWD, 4WS, spring-based suspension with adaptive shocks, sport seats and an AMG steering wheel.

For the time being, however, the E-Class AMG will only ship in a premium trim called Edition 1. It comes with exclusive body graphics and colors, special 21-inch wheels and black brake calipers, among other things.
