Mercedes-Benz is currently assembling its all-electric flagship crossover in the U.S. city of Tuscaloosa (Alabama), but the demand is no longer any good.
Back when the German company chose the destination for the EQS, it reckoned that North America would be a prime market for the expensive battery SUV. However, the sales fell short of the automaker’s expectations, urging it to reconsider the use of the Tuscaloosa plant. The EQS will now be made in Germany, while the U.S.-based facility will produce the next-gen GLC EV.
Mercedes doesn’t reveal the international sales data on any of its cars, but Automotive News claims that the EQS is well on track to finding fewer than 20,000 buyers this year. In the United States alone, the sales amounted to a paltry 7,086 units in January-September 2023.
Reports are now coming in that the production of the car will ‘soon’ be moved to the German city of Bremen. The specific date is unknown, but it looks like the EQS might end up discontinued altogether if it continues to struggle like this.
