Report: Mercedes-Benz ditches luxury EV platform

German newspaper Handelsblatt is reporting that Mercedes-Benz decided to abandon the development of the MB.EA Large, a 800-volt architecture for full-size electric cars.

Allegedly, the company explained that its EV plans going forward would depend solely on the market situation and demands. The implication is that the automaker’s more affluent customers are no longer particularly interested in buying expensive electric variants of the E-Class and S-Class. Those few who are still interested in driving a luxury EV will have to do with the next-generation EQE and EQS models based on a revamped old EVA2 platform.

At the same time, sources are saying that Mercedes is still interested in continuing work on its MB.EA Medium platform for mid-size EVs, like the next C-Class. Apparently, the company sees more economic sense in it than the MB.EA Large.
