Mercedes G-Class 4x4 Squared hits the road again

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a formidable off-roader even in its most bare-bone spec, but the German carmaker offers a whole range of performance upgrades for it. One of them – the 4x4² – has just been spotted testing again.

Despite the camo wrap, you can still discern massive flared arches, a roof rack, additional lights and higher ground clearance.

The old-gen G-Class 4x4² (see video) had 450 mm (17.6 inches) of clearance and could wade water up to a meter (3.3 ft.) high thanks to portal axles and permanent AWD with diff locks.

The new generation will most likely be powered by the standard Mercedes V8 4.0L TT, but the output numbers remain to be announced. Our guess is that it might produce as much as the AMG G63 at 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW).
