Mercedes-Benz has assembled half a million Geländewagen models. The anniversary G-Class rolled off the assembly line earlier this week and was stylized after its predecessors from the mid-1980s.
It is unknown whether there is a buyer for the SUV, but we suspect that the company would want it in its own museum collection.
The 500,000th G-Wagen produced sports an exterior themed after the 1986 Mercedes-Benz 280 GE. Compared to its stock counterpart, it wears a distinct shade of green called Agave Green and has orange turn indicators at the front end.
There is also a retro spare wheel case, special wheels and a nostalgia-inducing tartan interior trim. The press release says nothing about the engine type.
Mercedes-Benz calls the G-Class a long-lived off-roader, and we concur. With the production start as far away as 1979, the total volume of half a million vehicles over 44 years almost seems small by today’s standards. That said, the company argues that the small production quantities only serve to highlight the exclusivity of the model.
