Watch a quartet of G-Class EVs perform a ‘tank ballet’

Mercedes-Benz has found a creative way to demonstrate its latest electric G-Class prototype at the CES show last week, making four pre-production cars do multiple standing turns under the neon lights of the Las Vegas Strip.

The vehicles have performed multiple 360-degree turns – the company called this feature ‘G-Turn’ – and then rode away in a neat, organized procession. All four wore a black-and-blue camo wrap on their bodies. The asphalt had been sprinkled with water prior to the demo – likely to avoid overtaxing the sensitive electric powertrains.

The German automaker’s electric G-Class, provisionally known as the EQG, will have a flagship version powered by four independent motors installed one per every wheel. This version is rumored to be capable of more than 600 horsepower (450 kilowatts). By rotating their assigned wheels, the motors will make it possible to drive in any direction, which can come in handy in tight spots and on trickly landscape.

In earlier news, Mercedes said the battery-powered G-Wagen will be able to turn automatically by the number of degrees specified. If you aren’t showing off with a 360-degree turn, you can choose 90 degrees from your infotainment screen menu, specify the direction and let the car handle the rest.

The energized G-Class is expected to premiere later in H1 2024.
