Mercedes-AMG GLS & GLE get improved V8 engines, updated looks

The Mercedes-Benz GLS and GLE received their mid-generational refresh in March this year, leaving out AMG performance variants for the time being. They have now been properly announced for the U.S. market.

As it turns out, the refreshed GLS AMG and GLE AMG will both utilize a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 sourced from the latest S-Class. Partnered with a six-speed automatic transmission and a rear limited-slip differential, it will send 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels.

The company claims that both SUVs enjoy superior performance alongside a noticeable bump in fuel economy. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S now zaps 0-96.6 km/h (0-60 mph) in 3.6 seconds, and the bulkier GLS 63 manages the same in 3.9 seconds. Both don’t hit their acceleration limit until 280 km/h (174 mph).

Exterior tweaks include a new radiator grille, enlarged front air intakes and revised tri-point patterns in the lighting all around. Inside, a new AMG Performance steering wheel is arguably the only noteworthy update.

Sales in the United States are scheduled for this fall. Other market variants remain to be announced.
