Maybach moves upmarket, sets sights on Bentley & Rolls-Royce

Mercedes-Benz intends to endow its Maybach sub-brand with greater autonomy that will allow it to produce particularly luxurious and exclusive vehicles, Car&Driver reports quoting an anonymous high-ranking insider. A similar approach is currently practiced by top-end companies like Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

If we are to believe the report, then Maybach wants to expand its product portfolio by adding ultra-deluxe vehicles produced in tiny quantities or even in singular count for the most special clients. This will enable the company to attain a new, previously unachievable level of personalization.

The draft version of the strategy involves, among other things, producing a Grand Tourer stylistically close to the legendary 300SL Gullwing, a sporty EQS-based Shooting Brake model and a few custom electric G-Class versions. The Vision One-Eleven, which has so far been a concept car with no production prospects, may also enjoy a strictly limited production run.

This will let Maybach compete with the British luxury automakers – Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The former has the Batur coupe, and the latter has lineups like Droptail and Boat Tail, to name just a few. The German company reckons it can undercut those offers with its own prices starting below €1,000,000 on average.
