Rare AMG minivan crops up at an auction in the USA

Mercedes-AMG has only produced 200 Mercedes-Benz R 63 performance minivans from 2005 (see video), and one of them is up for grabs in the United States with the bidding at a low $20,313. That said, with a few days remaining, there is no telling how much it may go for.

The exotic and elusive Mercedes R-Class was produced in 2005–2013 and received two mid-life updates during those years, but ultimately dropped out of production due to lackluster sales. Back when the company was still hoping for it to become a market success, it greenlit a performance modification called the R 63 AMG.

Like all other similarly named models, the MPV received a 6.2-liter M156 V8 assisted by a supercharger. The engine produced 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW), but made the vehicle rather front-heavy due to its sheer bulk.

A seven-speed automatic transmission drove all four wheels in this version, talking the R-Class from zero to highway speed in 4.6 seconds. The top speed was clamped at 250 km/h (155 mph), but this example had the AMG Driver’s Package installed that lifted its output to 275 km/h (171 mph).

In the end, the R 63 AMG had stayed in production for less than a year. It never became a hit with the customers, and the production run of 200 units made the model one of the rarest AMG creations in history.

The MPV on sale has a cool 232,000 kilometers (144,000 miles) on the odo to show for being 16 years old. It sports cosmetic touch-ups and use marks throughout the body, but boasts an accident-free title. The winning bidder will be receiving a roof box, two extra wheel sets and two floor mat sets with their purchase.
