Mercedes-Benz rolls its advanced autopilot tech out on the streets

The government of Germany officially authorized Mercedes to use its Drive Pilot semi-autonomous driving tech on public roads last year, and the feature has now officially entered the market. In just a few days, buyers of the new S-class or its electric cousin, the EQS, will be able to specify it under options.

Prices vary between €5,000 and €7,430. The self-driving suite uses a set of high-precision 3D maps in conjunction with a LiDAR, multiple radars and cameras, and other assorted sensors to ensure smooth automated driving. It can accelerate, change lanes, brake to a halt and perform other maneuvers at 60 km/h (37.3 miles per hour) and below. Drivers who feel like relaxing for a bit may take their hands off the wheel whenever a special dash indicator lights up. Pressing a button on the steering wheel resumes normal driving.

Once the car leaves the certified “hands-free area”, drivers are expected to overtake controls at once. Should they fail to do so after 10 seconds, the car will park itself and make an emergency call.
