The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class family is finally welcoming its first plug-in hybrid member. Dubbed the S 580 e, it will originally only be available in China, but Europe and other regions will be getting it later.
The full reveal is still some days away, and we only have these two exterior photos to look at in the meantime. Judging by them, the car is styled completely in line with the other Maybachs (see video). The wheels, the bumpers and the radiator grille are all very similar to what we have seen before.
As for the powertrain, we suspect it could be identical to the one powering the current Mercedes-Benz S 580 e (non-Maybach). It consists of a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine turbocharged to 367 PS (362 hp / 270 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque and an electric motor integrated into a nine-speed automatic transmission. The motor contributes 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) of its own, letting the system output a maximum of 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).
The current S 580 e sedan needs 5.1 seconds to launch itself from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) and maxes out upon hitting 250 km/h (155 mph). It offers up to 100 km (62 miles) of driving range in all-electric mode.
