Mercedes-Benz rolls out the most powerful S-Сlass AMG yet

The new Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance crowns the range thanks to a powertrain borrowed from the five-door Mercedes-AMG GT with a slight reduction in power, but an improvement in electric range.

Like the liftback before it, the S-Class comes equipped with a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8, a rear-mounted electric motor and a nine-speed transmission delivering the torque to both ends. The gas engine makes 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque, while the electric add-on contributes another 190 PS (187 hp / 140 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft). The peak combined output is reported as 802 PS (791 hp / 590 kW) and 1,430 Nm (1,055 lb-ft).

The electric motor commands its own two-speed gearbox and electronic differential. Unlike the C 63 and AMG GT models making use of a tiny 6.1-kilowatt-hour battery, the S-Class flagship relies on a superior 13.1-kWh battery pack giving it up to 33 km (20.5 miles) of all-electric driving.

All prices and launch dates are pending.
