Video: New Mercedes-AMG SL 55 vs. Tuned 2004 LS 55

Mercedes introduced the latest generation of the SL-Class in 2021, landing it with two seats, a retractable top and high engine power. But how would it fare against a 20-year-old tuned SL? Carwow provides the answer.

The tuned ride is a 2004 SL 55 (R230) spec initially coming with a 5.5-liter turbocharged V8 producing 500 PS (493 hp / 368 kW). The actual power after the tune-up amounts to 634 PS (625 hp / 466 kW). A five-speed automatic transmission delivers the torque to the rear wheels. The curb weight is 1,885 kg, or 4,155 pounds.

In turn, the modern SL 55 (R232) has only 483 PS (476 hp / 355 kW) and weighs more at 1,950 kg (4,300 pounds). It still has a couple of aces up its sleeve, though – a state-of-the-art nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive give it quite a big advantage, at least, in theory.
