Mercedes-AMG SL spied running around with a charging port

The Mercedes SL-Class is getting ready to become a plug-in hybrid, as the latest bunch of spy photos clearly indicates. The test vehicle lacks camo, so the launch should be right around the corner.

From the design point of view, the SL-Class PHEV looks identical to its ICE counterpart except for a charging port visible in the back. The drivetrain includes the familiar 4.0L V8 of the SL 63 spec and a new electric motor. Rumor has it the system output maxes out at 811 PS (800 hp / 596 kW), a considerable upgrade over the standard version’s already impressive 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW).

As of right now, Mercedes only offers the SL series of vehicles under its sports-oriented AMG banner. As such, the new SL-Class comes equipped with a Panamericana radiator grille. For the first time in many years, it also rocks a soft top.
