Mercedes has added a new entry-level specification to the SL roadster lineup. Called the SL 43, it uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a single turbocharger and a small electric motor.
The turbo setup stems from the Formula 1 world, the manufacturer claims, adding that it ensures lightning-fast throttle response. While not stated explicitly, it is now obvious that the SL 43 is a mild hybrid.
The powertrain maxes out at 6,750 RPM and 386 PS (381 hp / 284 kW). The torque amounts to a solid 480 Nm (354 lb-ft), available from 3,250 RPM onwards. The electric add-on can provide a 14-PS (14-hp / 10-kW) boost over a brief period. Outfitted like this, the roadster sprints 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.9 seconds and maxes out at 275 km/h (171 mph).
