Companies specializing in motorhomes, trailers and light RVs had struggled to meet the huge demand during the Covid-19 pandemic, but that time is over. According to Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), the sales dropped by 49% in the first half of 2023 with only one exception standing out.
Tourist trailers took the worst hit with a 53.9% decrease in popularity compared to the first half of 2022. Truck-based camper sales fell 33.8%. The total number of RVs sold dropped from 228,740 the year before to just 105,975 units.
RVIA pointed out that full-blown motorhomes were losing buyers less abruptly than the other RV types with a year-on-year decline of just 17%.
The once notable exception is campervans, like Mercedes Sprinter conversions. They are still enjoying a brisk demand, and have even managed to grow in H1 by a modest 2.9 percent.
