Vintage car restorer Icon fits its elderly vehicles with electric powertrains sourced from Tesla Motors. This 71-year-old Mercury Coupe was its planned GIMS 2020 entry before the show was canceled over Covid-2019 concerns.
We have already seen the car almost a year ago, but it comes to the trade fair with a new portion of improvements. Powered by dual motors jointly rated at 400 hp (300 kW) and 637 Nm (470 lb-ft) of torque, it now speeds up to 150 mph (193 km/h) and extracts between 150 and 200 miles of range (240 – 320 km) from its 85-kWh battery.
The brand-new chassis with its independent suspension of both axles is a collaboration between Icon and Art Morrison Enterprises. The company also went through the pain of disassembling the geriatric ride down to the last bolt and putting it back together again, replacing the worn-out rubber parts as it did so and enhancing noise and vibration proofing wherever possible.
The end result is a vintage car that is not just hands-down powerful, but also extremely comfortable to drive and up to date in terms of tech.
