Check out a unique Mercury concept

A one-off Mercury concept car built 66 years ago is heading to an auction due in January. Dubbed the XM Turnpike Cruiser, the design study showcased all kinds of aviation-inspired features, which were all the rage in the mid-50s. There is no mention of a price, but the uniqueness and great condition could drive it straight into the sky.

The aeronautical features include chrome details at the front and fender trim bits, among other things. Giant fins at the rear along with contrasting add-ons resembling jet muzzles or motor pylons complement the theme nicely, and the exhaust pipes exit through the rear fenders.

The top has see-through inserts in it that lift automatically whenever a door is opened to facilitate getting in and out. The interior is also awash with aeronautical goodness: from turbine-shaped gauge wells to a concave front panel, everything does its best to convince you that you are in a spaceship.

Powering the unique show car is a 1954 Ford F250 drivetrain based on a 4.8-liter engine. The car was co-designed with the assistance of Italian customizer Ghia and proceeded to participate in various shows, but was ultimately abandoned. It changed hands several times and ended up with its current owner just five years ago. Ever since they bought it, the owner has been working hard to restore it.
