MG has taken the wraps off its sleek Cyberster roadster. Developed by SAIC Design Advanced London and Carl Gotham in particular, the prototype draws inspiration from the iconic MGB model produced way back in 1962–1980.
The Cyberster will be the first MG battery car to benefit from an innovative modular EV architecture that the carmaker plans to unveil towards the end of 2021. It looks like the recently founded Zhiji/IM marque might also make use of the new platform.
The company claims the powertrain is powerful enough to take the roadster 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in three seconds flat, while the battery is large enough to give it around 800 kilometers (500 miles) of NEDC-rated range.
Design-wise, the car has what its creators call a “laser belt” (apparently a fancy name for a LED strip embracing the entire body). The Magic Eye headlights are said to be interactive, and the brake lights sport a British flag pattern.
The cabin greets with a peculiar W-shaped, gamepad-like steering rudder. The driver has to pass a fingerprint scan before being allowed into the seat.
Elsewhere, the design study uses video cameras instead of side mirrors, and the video feed is displayed straight on the digital dash screen. Level 3 autonomy, 5G and OTA updates are all on the promised features list.
Stay tuned for the Auto Shanghai reveal in mid-April.
