MG schedules two premieres for late September

MG Motor Company is preparing two new cars for the upcoming Auto China show in Beijing: the MG 5 sedan and a still unnamed SUV.

The latter will boast a radiator grille widened towards the bottom and rounded at the corners, LED-based headlamps and DRLs, and brake lights stylized after the British national flag. Apparently, China-based MG continues to define itself as a British car marque.

From the technical point of view, the crossover vehicle will likely be based on the SSA unitized architecture. It will probably feature McPherson suspension on the front axle and multilink suspension at the rear end. Chinese media report that it might ship with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine (173 hp / 129 kW, 275 Nm / 203 lb-ft) and its 2.0-liter counterpart (231 hp / 132 kW, 370 Nm / 273 lb-ft). Possible transmissions include six-speed manual, as well as six- and seven-speed TST semi-auto. All trims except for the range-topping Trophy will come front-driven.

The MG 5 will be the marque’s second sedan to date after the first model that was produced in 2012–2017. The car is 4.675 mm long, 1,842 mm wide and 1,480 mm tall with 2,680 mm between the axles. When it ships, the two main options will be a 1.5L non-turbo (120 hp / 90 kW) and a 1.5L turbo (173 hp / 129 kW).

The MG lineup currently only has three models on offer: ZS (compact SUV, 4,323 mm long, 2,585 mm of wheelbase), HS (compact SUV, 4,574 mm / 2,720 mm), and MG 6 (liftback).
