MG – an originally British car brand now owned by the Chinese SAIC Group – has come to this year’s Goodwood show with the second generation of its mid-size crossover, the HS.
The newcomer is 4,670 mm (182.4 inches) long with 2,765 mm (108 inches) between the axles – 45 mm (1.8 inches) more wheelbase than the predecessor had. The trunk volume is 507 liters, or 17.9 cubic feet.
In its petrol version, the new MG HS packs a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine rated at 169 PS (167 hp / 124 kW). You can choose between six-speed manual and seven-speed preselector DCT, but only the front wheels can be driven.
There is also a plug-in hybrid version running a 1.5-liter engine dialed down to 142 PS (140 hp / 104 kW) and an electric motor contributing 209 PS (206 hp / 154 kW) of its own. Equipped like this, the car reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 6.8 seconds. With its 25-kWh battery fully charged, it has 121 km (75 miles) of electric range.
Trim-wise, there is a wireless phone charger included in the base spec, an eight-channel audio system, surround-view cameras and an active safety assist package.
Prices in the UK start from £25,000 for the ICE version and from £31,500 for the hybrid. The shipments are scheduled to begin before the end of July.
