MG Motor to launch an R&D HQ and a factory in Mexico

MG Motor Company, a car company that’s part of the state-owned SAIC Group in China, plans to localize its research, development and production in Mexico, Reuters reports.

According to the agency quoting a comment received from the automaker, MG sees Mexico as its next growth hub ripe with opportunities both for the formerly British car brand and the SAIC Group as a whole.

The vehicles manufactured in the country will be primarily exported to the Latin American and Caribbean Basin markets. The announcement makes it sound like the USA isn’t included in the sales geography, but CarBuzz supposes that MG may want to come back to North America after decades of absence. This remains to be seen.

It is also still unknown when the factory is expected to be built and commissioned, and how much investment it is expected to take. MG Motor points out that studying the peculiarities of the Latin American market will enable it to maximize profits. It sounds like the company is willing to listen to the customers and their wishes in a market that’s still new for it.

A communication from SAIC Group also said that another one of its subordinate brands – IM Motors – would soon start exporting its EVs to Mexico.
