MG signals an all-electric sportcar in 2020+

MG chief designer Shao Jingfeng said in a recent interview that the company was working on a new all-electric sport car model it plans to release in 2020 or later.

Mr. Jingfeng explained that, while the two-seat vehicle is going to be comparable in size to the Mazda MX-5, it is going to be based on a “brand-new sports platform”.

The all-electric MG E-Motion Concept unveiled in 2017 looks a rather likely source of inspiration for the upcoming roadster model, if you don’t mind that it has four seats and not two. Another concept car, the Dynamo, was revealed by MG as far back as 2014. The mini-hatchback was only 3 m 57 cm (11 ft. 9 in.) long and had a humble, 70hp / 52kW strong electric engine which could take it no farther than 80 kilometers (50 miles).

For the past 10 years, the MG brand has been part of the Chinese automotive giant SAIC Group. Its product range includes SUVs, sedans, and hatchbacks – but not a single sport car. When MG was young and still not widely known, it was the production of great lightweight sport cars and performance-packed roadsters that eventually brought it the fame it enjoys now. Perhaps someone in the management decided it was time to remember the roots?...
