MG Majestor touches down in India with full specs

MG, a formerly British car brand currently focusing on badge-engineering Chinese cars made by its parent company SAIC, has launched its Majestor body-on-frame SUV in India. Although touted as a “completely new development”, it rides on the same underpinnings as the local MG Gloster, a.k.a. Maxus D90 for China.

Compared to the Gloster, the new Majestor boasts even bigger bumpers at both ends, a particularly aggressive radiator grille, stacked headlights and a single brake light at the back. It spans 5,046 mm (197.1 inches) long and has 2,950 mm (115.2 inches) between the axles – exactly like the SAIC Maxus Territory it is based upon. “Territory” is the post-facelift name of the D90 mentioned above, so it checks out.

As one would expect, the steering wheel is on the right-hand side in the Majestor, but the rest stays more or less the same. There are two 12.3-inch displays on the dash along with some traditional physical buttons. Buyers can go with the standard seven-seat version of the SUV or opt for a more upscale six-seater.

In its most basic trim, the Majestor features a power-assisted tailgate, eco-leather seats, a three-zone HVAC and a couple of wireless charging pads. Basic cruise control and surround-view cameras sum up the electronic assists. Paying for the top trim unlocks ventilated/massage front seats, ACC, lane control, AEB, and blind spot monitoring.

The only engine available so far is sourced from the MG Gloster. It is a 2.0-liter, twin-turbo diesel linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission for 216 PS (213 hp / 159 kW) and 479 Nm (353 lb-ft) of torque. Buyers can choose between RWD and AWD.

Preorders are already running, but all prices are TBA. The Gloster currently starts from 38.33 Rs Lakh in India, which converts into $42,300. It’s safe to say that the Majestor will cost more than that.
