MINI’s exterior designer Josef Kuhlmann has shared a video where he explains an easy way to draw a Cooper S in just a couple of minutes.
He begins with detailing the wheels, arguing that getting them out of the way will let you understand the proportions of the rest of the car. He then proceeds to outline the three-door hatchback in thin, light strokes, and uses stencils for rounded parts such as the lights and, once again, the wheels.
Speaking of key design features, Kuhlmann highlights the hood intake that only really takes a few lines to draw, and sculpted bodywork – which is also not that challenging to get on paper. He also takes care to detail the signature front bumper vents.
After getting his crayon sketch of the Mini on paper, he shows how you can export it into digital form and colorize using a graphics tablet. He ends up with a very convincing drawing of the Cooper S (as you’d expect, but still).
