According to a source inside the company, the next generation of Mitsubishi Outlander SUVs may be based on the СМF-С/D car platform developed by the French-Japanese alliance Renault-Nissan. The vehicle may premiere in 2021.
Renault Kadjar and Nissan X-Trail are both examples of cars based on the СМF-С/D architecture. It was specifically developed to established a uniform vehicle production standard and to minimize production costs.
If the Japanese off-roader ends up with this platform at its base, it would have to ditch quite a few of its useful features. In particular, it will no longer be able to take advantage of 2.0L and 2.4L four-cylinder gasoline engines. The 3.0L V6 gasoline engine and the 2.0L common-rail injection diesel will also be unsupported.
As a replacement, the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander may inherit the Renault-Nissan motor lineup ranging between 143 and 170 hp (107 – 127 kW). This is actually what the latest Nissan X-Trail ships with. Then again, the updated vehicle may benefit from a number of brand-new, purpose-built engines.
