Non-Stop Action: Mini Cooper SE to conclude a Nürburgring lap without braking

MINI intends to set an unusual record with its all-electric Cooper SE: running the entire North Loop of the Nürburgring without hitting the brakes even once. The automatic regenerative brake function should facilitate this.

The Mini Cooper SE comes rated at 184 hp (137 kW) and 270 Nm (200 pound-feet) of torque, accelerating 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 7.3 seconds and hitting its electronic speed cap at 150 km/h (93 mph). A 32.6-kWh on-board battery translates into between 235 and 270 kilometers (146 – 168 miles) of range, depending on the circumstances.

You can set the desired power regeneration level by throwing a tumbler switch on the center console; the available values are 0.11g and 0.19g. The available drive modes are Sport, Mid, Green и Green+, and the company intends to go Green on the ‘Ring.

MINI already performed a test run, but didn’t disclose the lap time, emphasizing that it would need to return several more times for the driver to determine the optimal mode that would enable them to keep the foot away from the brake pedal for the entire duration of the lap. The company refused to comment on whether this condition was fulfilled during the test run.
