Roewe Jing is one whale of an SUV

Roewe will be attending the Shanghai trade fair starting next week with a coupe-SUV named Jing, which stands for ‘whale’.

The car follows the design philosophy known as ‘emotional rhythm’ and sports a rather unusual front grille vaguely reminiscent of a whale mouth. The side mirrors are no less bizarre, the c-pillars are ribbed, the handles slide out, and the exhaust finishers are trapezoid-shaped. Rounding off the odd-looking car are taillights said to be styled after ‘an interstellar tunnel’.

Technical specifications remain to be announced. It would make sense for the Jing to use the same tech platform as other Roewe vehicles, and the RX5 Max model featured in the video here appears to be an optimal candidate for donorship. The compact car is 4,647 mm long, 1,891 mm wide and 1,725 mm with 2,760 mm separating the axles.

The abovementioned Max model comes equipped with a 1.5-liter petrol engine rated at 173 PS (171 hp / 127 kW) and 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) of torque. Another option comes in the form of a 2.0-liter unit capable of 231 PS (228 hp / 170 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque. You can choose either six-speed manual or six-range semi-auto for transmission, but the drive will stay locked to the front axle. Suspension features McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link design in the back.
