49-year-old Mercedes 280SE goes electric

The majority of modern Mercedes-Benz cars, not even necessarily AMG ones, tend to put sporty appearances, dynamics and handling close to the top on their priority list. But what if you just want to drive a luxurious and comfortable car, like this 1972 Mercedes 280SE?

Electrification was the answer for the owner of this particular example. He removed the old petrol engine and put a 2013 Nissan Leaf powertrain in its place. As one may expect, the acceleration isn’t that great at 9.1s 0-100 km/h, but it isn’t terrible, either. Furthermore, it more or less corresponds to what the car originally had and ensures smooth going that befits its luxury status.

From the outside, the only way you can tell it’s a restomod is by looking at the trunk lid badge or the suspension. The cabin, however, looks nothing like before and could use some getting used to. Highlights include a digital dashboard, an infotainment system, power windows, cruise control, power steering and a reversing camera, among others.
