Defender-imitating Ineos Grenadier gets pushed back to mid-2022

Ineos Automotive has decided to postpone the launch of its Grenadier 4x4 SUV, citing certain structural design challenges that will take a while to resolve. The Land Rover Defender lookalike will not come out in the end of 2021 as previously planned.

The launch timeframe is now set on mid-2022, or six months after the initial date. In case you were wondering, the Grenadier is a body-on-frame SUV designed by Magna-Steyr after the image of the old-gen Land Rover Defender that permanently retired five years ago.

The Canadian-Austrian enterprise revealed its first prototype last fall, landing it with round headlights, a body five-door body, flat paneling, and equally flat glass all around. BMW agreed to supply 3.0-liter inline-six engine for the project (both gasoline and diesel), and ZF agreed to provide its eight-speed automatic transmission design.

The manufacturer will be putting together 130 test vehicles that will have to cover at least 1.1 million kilometers (683,500 miles) before going into production. Cold weather tests will take place in Sweden and hot weather tests in deserts throughout the USA and Middle East.

Production will be localized in Hambach, France. Prices in Europe are expected to begin at €45,000.
