Hydrogen-powered BMW X5 to emerge next year

BMW intends to produce a limited run of its X5 crossover SUV based on hydrogen fuel cell tech, CEO Oliver Zipse said during a recent shareholders’ meeting.

Many car manufacturers nowadays pay special attention to getting their vehicles in line with the increasingly strict European and Chinese environmental laws. Some switch to electricity while others explore hydrogen powertrains that only produce small amounts of water from tailpipes as far as emissions go.

Fuel cell cars generally have more driving range than their battery-based counterparts do, although refueling is still an issue in the regions where infrastructure is lacking.

In late 2020, Toyota showed us the second generation of its Mirai sedan and announced working with BMW to help it create its own hydrogen car. As it turns out now, that car will be an X5, and it is scheduled to come out in 2022.

Other examples of car manufacturers looking into the fuel cell tech include Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Motors.
