5th-gen Range Rover bows with new tech, engines and options

Land Rover has unveiled the fifth generation of its Range Rover SUV, revealing major changes and improvements in nearly every aspect.

Buyers can choose from two wheelbase sizes now, specifically 2,997 mm (117 inches) and 3,197 mm (124.9 inches). Both have up to 295 mm (11.5 inches) of ground clearance and can wade through water up to 0.9 meters (3 feet) high. Rear wheels can turn up to 7.3° for easier steering. Thanks to a move to the MLA-Flex architecture, the car body is 1.5 times as rigid as before.

A new feature called eHorizon manages suspension profiles based on satellite navigation data. Rather than utilizing a permanent AWD system with an inter-axle diff lock, the car now benefits from a smart system involving a multi-plate clutch that couples the front wheels when necessary and has an active electronic diff lock at the rear wheels. The ZF eight-speed automatic transmission is still there, but it now works in tandem with a dual-range transfer case with a reduction gear.

Terrain Response 2 enables choosing from multiple drive modes. The company claims that a unique solution is used for active brake cooling.

Top trims will ship with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo BMW V8 rated at 530 PS (523 hp / 390 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, which can take the SUV from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds. Availability of the diesel-powered D250, D300 and D350 variants and gas-powered P360 and P400 ones will differ from market to market (the numbers in each case denote their respective power ratings in metric horsepower).
