Ioniq 5 passes moose test better than some premium EVs did

Spanish project km77.com has published a test report of another EV, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The car outperformed many premium electric cars and its own twin, the Kia EV6.

A RWD Ioniq 5 with a single motor rated at 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and a 73-kWh traction battery was picked for the test. It rode on 19-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Primacy 4 tires.

The first run at 77 km/h was an immediate success: the driver barely touched a few cones after the final maneuver, but this was not considered a failure. The crew pointed out that the car had its energy regeneration system running on minimal settings throughout the test.

Higher speeds did not yield better results, but repeated attempts culminated in one perfect run at 80 km/h with the regenerative braking performance set to Level 3 (max=4). Going higher than 80 km/h aggravated understeer issues.

The research team found that there was a significant amount of swaying that the suspension was able to dampen very efficiently. Steering stayed consistent throughout the entire test period, and electronic driving aids only made gentle adjustments in the course of the car.

In last December, the same team tested a Kia EV6 with a similar powertrain on board and was able to pass the moose test at 78 km/h. Both SUVs turned out better than the Skoda Enyaq, Ford Mustang Mach‑E and Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, only barely yielding the hall of fame to Tesla SUVs.
