Car Tuning

This is how a barn-found Vauxhall Victor can become a modern sports car

It would be incorrect to assume that there were no truly fast cars in the 1960s: take the Jaguar E-Type, for example, which could hit 241 km/h (150 mph) with a few tweaks here and there. Still, mundane sedans like the Vauxhall Victor could only dream about such performance.

This example won the lucky ticket when it dropped into the hands of Paul Martin, from Great Britain. The car enthusiast purchased the elderly saloon from an owner who had marinated it in a garage for decades, hoping to get around to turning it into a rally car someday. He never did, so Martin bought it out and spent the next 19 years perfecting his custom build on an on-and-off basis.

The car got rid of two of its doors and received an Audi S4 drivetrain transplant that included both the 4.2-liter V8 rated at 344 PS (339 hp / 253 kW) and the Tiptronic six-speed auto. If you need some perspective, consider that the original Vauxhall engine was only good for 70 PS (69 hp / 51 kW) on paper, while in reality, it made around 61 PS (60 hp / 45 kW).

The result is a restomod that has everything in the right places to outpace the Jaguar mentioned above – after all, the Audi S4 maxes out at 250 km/h (155 mph). Unfortunately, Martin overlooked a major timing chain problem as he put everything together, so the car turned out rather slow on the uptake. He ultimately had to disassemble the whole drivetrain again just to fix the chain, but at least it works much better now.

Martin put the Victor up for sale with a £24,500 suggested price the other day and soon found a new owner, who may or not have haggled for it.
