The new Peugeot 408 for Europe is a fastback

While the old EU-spec Peugeot 408 had a sedan body, the new one is a fastback – at least, according to the manufacturer itself. If you asked us, ‘coupe-SUV’ would probably be a better fit.

One way or another, the newcomer is a technical relative of the Peugeot 308 model that went into its new generation in 2021. The two have similar headlights and taillights with “lion’s talons” in the latter. The bezel-free radiator grille sports a new badge and resembles that of the 3008 SUV.

You can order the fastback with Matrix headlamps, 20-inch wheels and a couple of 10-inch dash displays, like in the Peugeot 308. Hardware buttons below the infotainment screen provide access to some common functions, so at least you don’t have to use the touchscreen all the time.

Paid options include a premium audio system, parking assistance, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and night vision.

As expected, the car will be available with three high-end powertrains of the 308 lineup, specifically a turbo three-cylinder rated at 130 PS (128 hp / 96 kW), a PHEV capable of 180 PS (177 hp / 132 kW), and another PHEV good for 225 PS (222 hp / 165 kW). The transmission is eight-speed automatic in all cases. An all-electric variant is also underway to the market, but its availability date remains to be announced.
