Check out the Airstream Excella, a motorhome the likes of which astronauts lived in

This 40-year-old Airstream Excella is currently being auctioned off with a few days remaining and the bidding at $41,750. A modded variant of the Excella was used by astronauts during their normal quarantine periods.

Airstream unveiled the camper in the 1970s, styling it in the same vein as its earlier trailers (airplane-like riveted aluminum exterior) but putting it on a GM chassis to create a standalone motorhome. Using a ready GM platform eliminated the need to source custom parts and made maintenance easy.

A 7.4-liter engine under the hood works with an automatic transmission and has around 118,000 kilometers (73,000 miles) on it. Even after all these years, the engine is good enough to accelerate the motorhome to 105 km/h (65 mph) and above.

Found inside are a bedroom with two beds, a shower and a WC. Two more occupants can sleep on a foldable sofa. The kitchen on board offers a dual sink, a fridge and a four-burner stove. Two air conditioners provide cooling and limited heating features.

NASA astronauts used to observe their mandatory quarantine in Airstream RVs both before the Excella model came to the market and after. The company built as many as four NASA-specific customs united under the common name Astrovan (see video). These are all being kept in museums now.
