Ultra-rare Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione heading to auction

A 35-year-old 1987 Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione will be auctioned off on October 19-21, 2022. It is one out of only five such cars in existence and one out of three owned by private collectors.

The Evoluzione was a track-focused, Groupe B modification of the standard 288 GTO model. The Italian company had planned on making 20 units, but the premature demise of the Groupe B rally series led to only five being made.

While Italdesign came up with the exterior of the original 288 GTO, it was Pininfarina that worked on the rally racer. A host of new body parts and trim pieces changed its exterior beyond recognition, attracting polarized reviews.

A number of tech modifications helped the Evoluzione become more powerful than its street-legal cousin. The 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 under the hood was boosted from its original 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) to a superb 659 PS (650 hp / 485 kW). The power looks especially impressive when you consider that the whole car weighs just 940 kilos (2,072 pounds).

This particular example is in great condition. Not long ago, it was serviced by Michelotto, the company that participated in the making of the 288 GTO Evoluzione. The list of replaced parts included dampers, brake calipers, coolant pump and tires. The turbines and the drivetrain were reworked as well, costing the owner €133,000.

There are no price estimates right now.
