Hyundai vows to keep physical buttons alive in cars… for a while

At least for the foreseeable future, Hyundai is resolved to keep installing hardware controls into its vehicle interiors, the company’s Design Director Sang Yup Lee said in an interview to Cars Guide. He quoted safety reasons and admitted that sooner or later, physical buttons may become redundant.

According to him, the company puts physical controls wherever they are essential for the driver to stay focused on the road. They are easier to find by feeling, their location is easier to memorize, and they can be used without looking. Using the infotainment touchscreen, on the contrary, requires you to take your eyes off the road and look at the display.

As nice as it may sound, Sang Yup Lee still thinks the traditional buttons are heading the way of the dinosaur. As soon as Level 4 self-driving systems and above begin spreading, people may no longer need to monitor the road situation all the time, making it easier to use the infotainment.
