Ferrari ex-designer reveals his latest work

At the recent Concours d’Elegance at Lake Como, Italy, famous car designer Ken Okuyama unveiled a luxury speedster with vintage charms that he named ‘kode61 Birdcage’ in a nod to a famous Maserati classic.
The nickname Birdcage belonged to the Maserati Tipo 61 back in the early 1960s. The endurance racer had a peculiar-looking frame, which indeed looked a bit like a bird cage. Okuyama, who took part in designing such famous classics as the Ferrari Enzo and the Porsche 911 (996), borrowed the concept and individual design features from that car.
The kode61 Birdcage lacks a roof and offers two sun visors instead of a windshield. It boasts accentuated wheel arches and an unusual body tapering towards both ends like the hull of an aircraft. Triangular forms observed from various angles also reference the space-frame the Tipo 61 was based upon. The interior is suitably retro-styled.
Okuyama neglected to mention any technical specifics, but, in all likelihood, the kode61 Birdcage is based on an existing production car like all of his previous works. It is not just a show concept, either – a small batch is planned for production.
