BMW considers producing the Z4-based Shooting Brake

The BMW Concept Touring Coupe unveiled earlier this week could get a limited production run sometime, BMW Design Director Adrian van Hooydonk said in his latest interview with Motor1. He stressed that there were no such plans for the foreseeable future, though.

The Concept Touring Coupe is based on the latest Z4 Roadster platform and could therefore be regarded as the successor of the BMW Z3, a hardtop that came out in 1998–2002 and was nicknamed “Clown’s Shoe” due to its unusual proportions.

When the Bavarian automaker introduced the concept earlier this week, it did not mention the Z3. Instead, it said the car was inspired by some of its earlier creations – the 328 Touring Coupe that claimed the gold of Mille Miglia in 1940 and the 02 Series Touring of the ‘70s.

Van Hooydonk admitted that several guests who attended the reveal event said they wanted a car like that. BMW management expected such a reaction and promised to consider releasing the Touring Coupe in a small batch if it found enough buyers – 50 or so would be enough. The final decision remains to be made, however, and even if the production gets greenlit, there is no saying at this moment when it may start.
