Reports: Ford to trim down its F-150 lineup

Ford has decided to reduce the number of F-150 modifications on sale as part of its cost-cutting and global portfolio optimization strategy, Automotive News reports referencing Brand VP Kumar Galhotra.

Speaking with the news agency, Galhotra reportedly said that many versions of the F-150 truck would drop out of production very soon. He added that this would enable the company to save on making 2,400 unique parts.

A similar fate awaits the Explorer SUV, which will go from using 500 different wire combinations to just 20. According to Kumar Galhotra, the change is pretty drastic and will be felt by buyers. Having said that, he added that the age of facelifts and annually updated body moldings was going away in any case. Forward-looking automakers were trying to come up with car designs that would only need software updates after release.
