The seller of this 38-year-old Nissan 300ZX racer claims Tom Cruise drove it at a motorsports event in 1988. The bidding is at a low $6,500 right now, but with a week remaining on the clock, things are likely to change.
The star actor competed in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) series in the late 1980s. He said he discovered this hobby thanks to Paul Newman, who he starred with in the 1986 movie The Color of Money.
In 1988, Cruise joined Newman Sharp Racing and even claimed a few victories, but towards the end of the SCCA season that year, most viewers learned to read the abbreviation as See Cruise Crash Again. Observers blamed the actor’s overly aggressive driving habit for his constant crashes.
The seller does not specify whether the 300ZX on sale was also at the receiving end of Cruise’s rage. There is also no mention of the number of owners or a clean record. What we do know is that the cat spent several years at a scrapyard until its current owner bought it in 2004. Two years later, it was subjected to a full teardown, restoration and paint restoration that saw the number 70 return to the sides and the caption ‘Tom Cruise’ to the roof.
The stock 3.0-liter V6 was also upgraded with numerous special parts and hooked onto a five-speed manual gearbox. The car makes use of aftermarket suspension components by Nismo and Tokico, sports an aerodynamic kit and has new bucket seats inside. It is unclear whether it was converted to street-legal following the restoration.
