The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has officially confirmed an intention to have 35 different battery cars based on 5 platforms in its portfolio by the end of the decade. Other goals include expanding the applicability of self-driving systems, launching innovative battery production and making EVs more affordable overall.
The platforms will be designed to suit vehicles from all kinds of market niches. for instance, some will be used to produce the cheapest cars, like the Dacia Spring, and ultra-compact Japanese Kei cars.
Compact electric hatchbacks, as well as mid-size sedans and crossover SUVs will get another dedicated architecture for themselves. Another platform yet will be used almost exclusively for light commercial transports.
Specific models on the roadmap include an all-electric successor to the Nissan Micra (see video). The corporation plans to build the new Micra on the same tech as the revived Renault 5. Both are due on the market in mid-2020s, and the production will take place in France.
In addition to the above, Renault will design a new large seven-seater SUV that will slot in right above the recently announced Austral. Aside from the titular marques of the alliance, the platforms will be utilized by its other constituent brands, like Alpine, Dacia and Infiniti.
One of the nearest premieres is that of the new Mitsubishi ASX, which is set to debut next year based on the same architecture as the upcoming Nissan Juke and Renault Captur models.
