Nissan goes full-on electric in Europe, ditches Euro-7 engine R&D

Nissan has confirmed its intention to only offer hybrids and all-electric cars in Europe, and stop trying to develop an internal combustion engine model that would be compatible with Euro-7 standards.

The new environmental legislation comes into power around 2025, but Nissan promises to introduce only electrified vehicles in Old World countries starting from 2023. Current-generation ICE cars will continue to be made and sold as long as they still comply with the standards.

If the company sticks to the plan, eco-friendly cars will account for three quarters of its entire EU sales in four years’ time. By the start of the next decade, there will be no ICE vehicles left on the Nissan lineup.

Right now, the company offers such EVs as Ariya, Leaf and Townstar in Europe, along with hybrids Juke and Qashqai. Later additions will include a compact SUV to replace the Leaf, an all-electric Micra, and a part-electric X-Trail. A total of six “green” models have been announced so far, the first of them set to debut this summer.
