New Nissan GT-R won’t be arriving anytime soon

The current-gen Nissan GT-R (R35, featured in the video here) may have been around for 12 years, but this doesn’t mean it will be getting an update in the foreseeable future, Project Manager Hiroshi Tamura said in an interview.

He added that the GT-R has ‘serious potential’ as it is, and rushing a new generation onto the market ‘just because’ would be unreasonable. Furthermore, he called the R35 body design ‘nearly contemporary’.

The Japanese carmaker still hasn’t decided what it wants to do with the next GT-R. The way things stand right now, the super sports coupe might end up with any kind of drivetrain, be it traditional, hybrid, or electric. At any rate, Nissan hasn’t even built a single test mule so far.

Granted, things may change quickly once the final concept of the new GT-R is approved, but we wouldn’t expect the premiere until the later 2020s.
