Godzilla waves the Old World goodbye as Nissan axes the GT-R

The Nissan GT-R has already left the showrooms of Spain, Italy and Netherlands as the automaker is wrapping up its shipments to Europe for good.

The supercar continues to be available in Belgium and Germany, but most other countries no longer have it listed on their official websites. The reason is as prosaic as a failure to meet emission requirements: the stock 3.8-liter twin-turbo six-pot makes 570 PS (562 hp / 419 kW), but it also spews out 316 grams of CO2 per kilometer, which is deemed unacceptable.

High price is another reason. The German website lists no pricing details, while the Belgium dealership asks at least €107,300 for a standard sports car and about twice as much for a 600-PS (592-hp / 441-kW) Nismo version. Speaking to reporters, dealership representatives admitted that selling a GT-R is challenging at the time.

The Godzilla is still present in the USA and has about the same price numbers listed as in Europe, but expressed in dollars instead of euros, making it a better deal. One should keep in mind that most prices listed do not include taxes.

It looks like limited sales geography does not prevent Nissan from working on a next generation, however. The company stays silent about it, but rumors are trickling in that the new GT-R will be based on the same platform as the current one, and even the same engine. Its design and dimensions should also stay largely unchanged. The premiere is expected next year.
