Franck Galiègue has opened an unusual museum called Movie Car Central in the suburbs of Paris, France dedicated to genuine cars used at the filming sets of classic movies. Reuters says the exhibition currently consists of 43 vehicles, and some of them are replicas – but you can come and rent one for a (brief) ride.
For example, the equivalent of U.S. $104 gets you a replica of the DeLorean DMC-12 ‘Time Machine’ from Back to the Future. $83 nets you a K.I.T.T. from the Knight Rider show.
The collection also features 12 cars from the Fast & Furious franchise, including 8 originals actually used on the filming set. A joyride in a Nissan Skyline GT-R costs $188, for example. Channeling your inner Duke of Hazzard behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger will set you back $241. The catch? Most of the time, the rental terms specify that you can make a lap or two on a closed circuit just 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) long.
Other noteworthy examples include a Peugeot 406 from Taxi, a Ford Gran Torino from Starsky & Hutch, and a few vehicles from the various Jurassic Park movies. The collection continues expanding, with the 1989 Tim Burton’s Batmobile underway to the museum right now and a mystery vehicle from the first Robocop movie set to be next.
Galiègue himself highlights a certain Chevrolet Malibu as the cornerstone of the entire collection, claiming it starred in the 2011 movie ‘Drive’ with Ryan Gosling. According to him, the film crew used three such cars on the set: one was wrecked in the process, and another one went to Gosling. The third and final one was claimed by Movie Car Central and is on display right now – but you cannot rent it.
