Unofficial: Nissan Leaf EV nearing end of life

According to Automotive News citing anonymous sources, Nissan will soon wrap up the production of its first mass-market EV, the Leaf. The factories in Japan, USA and UK will allegedly drop it from production for good sometime in mid-2020s.

According to the insider, the automaker envisions a completely new mass-market EV as the replacement for the Leaf, which apparently failed to deliver on its high expectations.

Interestingly, we are also told that the executives of the Japanese marque feel their eagerness to start investing in battery cars and their production sites was premature at best. For instance, its industrial complex in the United States had been originally designed to churn out 150,000 Leaf EV units per year. However, even when the car was at its pinnacle of popularity, Nissan only managed to find buyers for fewer than 50,000 units on that market annually, not justifying the investment.
